Study: Peer Pressure Susceptibility Lasts into Adulthood
“While other studies suggest that this influence nearly disappears after late adolescence, we find it here — though more limited — in young adulthood and even in middle age,” said Dr. Kendra Seaman.

According to Dr. Mandy Maguire, the new study found that having more adults in the household is beneficial, but exactly why and under what conditions requires further exploration.

Center for Vital Longevity Expands Scope of Cognitive Research
“We need to understand more about optimal brain development during childhood and early adolescence because it can have important consequences for how well people do cognitively in later life,” said Dr. Michael Rugg.

Project Aims To Get to Bottom of Possible Catalyst in Diabetic Pain
The researchers’ goal is to develop non-opioid therapies to relieve the chronic pain that reduces quality of life for about half of diabetic patients.

“Anyone who notices a perception of ringing in their ears, ears that feel ‘full,’ sound seeming muffled, or increased difficulty understanding speech or other sounds has likely caused damage to their ears,” said Dr. Colleen Le Prell.

Backed by $1.6M DHA Grant, UT Dallas Neuroscientist Works To Improve Word Retrieval in MS Patients
Dr. John Hart Jr. and his team have seen a “significant response eight weeks after therapy. That’s a strong window for a nonpharmacologic treatment,” the physician-scientist said.

Breanna Shen
Breanna Shen BS ’23

National Merit Scholar and Goldwater Scholar, Breanna Shen BS’23 is now an MD/PhD student at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston and UT MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Shen was one of six graduate students across the U.S. to win the Marcus L. Urann Fellowship. During her time as a BBS student, Shen published a book of poetry; and she still makes time to play her violin with a chamber music group in Houston.
